Reds Clipped Late as Phillies Rally at Great American Ball Park

The Cincinnati Reds were in control for most of the night against the Philadelphia Phillies, but a late surge by the visitors turned a one-run lead into a 4-1 defeat.
Andrew Abbott was brilliant through seven innings, holding the NL East leaders to just three hits. But with two outs in the eighth, the Phillies strung together RBI doubles from Weston Wilson and Trea Turner before Ohio native Kyle Schwarber launched his league-leading 42nd homer to seal the rally.
The Reds’ lone run came in the first, when TJ Friedl doubled and scored on a Gavin Lux single. While the loss stings, Abbott’s bounce-back outing after a rough start in Chicago was a positive takeaway as Cincinnati looks to even the series behind Brady Singer.
