Penske Power Reigns on Opening Day at Indy
The Month of May roared to life at Indianapolis Motor Speedway as Team Penske and Chip Ganassi Racing set the tone on a lightning-delayed first day of Indy 500 practice. Will Power topped the speed charts with a blistering 227.026 mph lap, closely followed by teammate and two-time defending Indy 500 champion Josef Newgarden.
The Ganassi group wasn’t far behind, with points leader Alex Palou placing third and six-time champ Scott Dixon fourth. Rain and lightning trimmed down the session, but not before 34 drivers logged nearly 3,900 miles around the famed oval.
Power’s lap came in the final 30 minutes of the session, giving the Penske camp early bragging rights. With legends like Helio Castroneves still showing speed and young guns looking to make their mark, the lead-up to the 109th running of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing is officially underway.
Practice resumes today with expanded track time and plenty of questions as teams tweak setups in pursuit of May glory. The 109th Running of the Indianapolis 500 Presented by Gainbridge can be heard on 1010 WCSI, 98.1 FM and here on our website with coverage beginning at 11 am the day of the race, May 25th.
