Colts Show Spark, But Packers Rally to Spoil Preseason Party

The Indianapolis Colts put their quarterback competition in the spotlight Saturday night at Lucas Oil Stadium, and while the crowd saw flashes of brilliance, the final score told a different story. The Green Bay Packers rallied late for a 23-19 preseason win, dropping Indy to 0-2 this August.

Richardson’s Rhythm

Anthony Richardson Sr. finally found some preseason groove, going 6-for-11 for 73 yards and leading the Colts’ first touchdown drive of the exhibition slate. He showed poise and protection of the football — no turnovers, no fumbles — while keeping the offense balanced. The drive ended with Tyson Goodson barreling in from three yards out, giving Colts fans a glimpse of what the offense could look like in full stride.

Jones Holds His Ground

Veteran Daniel Jones got the start and looked sharp in limited action, completing 7 of 11 passes for 101 yards. The Colts’ brain trust still hasn’t named a starter for Week 1 against Miami, but Coach Shane Steichen admitted postgame that a decision is coming soon.

Injuries Overshadow Progress

The biggest hit of the night came off the field. Right tackle Braden Smith left with a groin injury, and backup Blake Freeland was carted off with a fractured leg. Add in injuries to Hunter Wohler, Johnathan Edwards, and Jacob Phillips, and Indy’s training staff had its hands full.

What’s Next

At 0-2, the Colts have one more preseason tune-up — a trip to Cincinnati next Saturday. While the win column isn’t the main focus in August, Richardson’s continued growth and the offensive line’s health will be the biggest preseason headlines heading into the opener.

For now, the Horseshoe may be limping, but the Colts are hoping to gallop into September at full strength.
