Conference Indiana in Flux as Terre Haute Schools Exit
Conference Indiana is undergoing a seismic shift.
On Thursday, Terre Haute North and Terre Haute South officially announced they will leave the league to join the Sagamore Conference starting with the 2026-27 school year. The decision drastically reshapes the landscape of Conference Indiana, which will be reduced to just three remaining schools: Columbus North, Bloomington South, and Southport. Bloomington North, another longtime member, is also set to depart in that same cycle, heading for the Mid-State Conference.
The Sagamore Conference, established in 1968, is undergoing its own transformation. The addition of Terre Haute North and South brings its future membership to six schools, joining Lebanon, Danville, McCutcheon, and Harrison—all of whom are either current or incoming members. Meanwhile, Tri-West will exit the Sagamore after the 2025-26 school year to join the Hoosier Legends Conference.
Vigo County Schools cited better travel logistics, competitive balance, and stronger community ties as motivating factors behind the move. Athletic directors within the Sagamore Conference have already begun planning schedules to accommodate the new alignment.
This realignment is part of a wider reshuffling across the state. New conferences such as the Monon Athletic Conference and Hoosier Legends Conference are forming, while programs like Shelbyville, Vincennes Lincoln, Greenwood, and Madison Consolidated are also finding new homes.
For Conference Indiana, the departure of its Terre Haute and Bloomington members marks the end of an era. It now faces a critical crossroad—either rebuild with new members or potentially dissolve entirely. Regardless of its future, the impact of this wave of realignment will be felt across Indiana high school sports for years to come.
