Columbus Rugby Nearly Shocks the State in Comeback Classic
Talk about a comeback that almost made history. Columbus Boys Rugby showed why grit and heart go a long way in a near-upset of powerhouse Avon Westside, falling just 31-29 after a furious second-half rally.
Trailing 31-10 with just 15 minutes to go—and down to just 12 players on the field—Columbus found another gear. Tries from Jose Ramirez (who scored twice), Sam Mormino, and Mason King sparked a near-miraculous comeback.
Javier Cuenca Mansaque nailed two conversions to pull the boys within two, but the final conversion attempt just missed the mark, sealing Avon’s narrow win.
Still, Columbus walks away with their heads high. This game will be remembered as a turning point for the program as they prepare for Noblesville on April 30 at McCullough’s Run Park.
