Colts Kick Off QB Competition with Richardson Getting First Crack

The Indianapolis Colts are set to open their preseason on Thursday night against the Baltimore Ravens, and the quarterback carousel begins with a familiar face. Third-year signal-caller Anthony Richardson Sr. will get the start under center, as the Colts begin evaluating their options between Richardson and offseason acquisition Daniel Jones.
Richardson is slated to play roughly a quarter and a half, with Jones expected to follow for about two drives. Neither quarterback is expected to play behind the full starting offensive line, but it will still be a valuable audition in a tightly contested race.
While Richardson has struggled with injuries and inconsistency in past seasons, the Colts coaching staff remains high on his upside and ability to create with his legs. Jones, meanwhile, is looking for redemption after a rocky tenure with the Giants. He signed a one-year deal with Indy in hopes of reviving his career in a fresh system.
The Colts host Green Bay next week, where Jones will get the start. Head coach Shane Steichen emphasized that the team will take the full preseason to make a decision, but all signs point to a fair and open battle heading into Week 1.
