Chargers Spark NFL’s Return with Preseason Power Surge in Canton
The pigskin party is officially underway, and it kicked off with a lightning bolt! The Los Angeles Chargers stormed into Canton, Ohio, and thundered past the Detroit Lions 34-7 in the NFL’s Hall of Fame Game on Thursday night, opening the 2025 preseason in electric fashion.
Chargers quarterback Trey Lance flashed the potential that made him a top draft pick, delivering two touchdowns and 120 yards while completing 13-of-20 passes. Lance looked poised and precise, finding receivers downfield and commanding the huddle like a seasoned veteran. His 28-yard dart to KeAndre Lambert-Smith was one of several highlight-reel moments that gave fans a jolt of excitement.
The Chargers defense and special teams weren’t about to be left out of the fun—they forced five turnovers, turning Lions possessions into golden opportunities and ultimately 17 points. Undrafted rookie cornerback Nikko Reed jumped on the opportunity to make a name for himself, nabbing a first-half interception and turning heads on the sideline.
The Lions struggled to hold onto the ball but did see flashes of promise from their rookie receivers. Isaac TeSlaa and Dominic Lovett combined for seven catches and 77 yards, keeping the Motor City faithful optimistic as preseason shifts into gear.
The Hall of Fame Game sets the stage for Saturday’s enshrinement ceremony, where NFL legends Antonio Gates, Jared Allen, Eric Allen, and Sterling Sharpe will receive their gold jackets and take their place among the greats.
The full preseason slate kicks off August 7th, and fans in Bartholomew County can follow the journey right here as we gear up for a big fall of football—starting with IU coverage, local high school action, and Colts updates all season long.
