Water company bringing new $50 million plant to Seymour

Indiana American Water Company is making a $50 million investment in Seymour.

The utility announced today that it would be moving the city’s water treatment plant, adding capacity and taking it out of the floodplain. The current facility is adjacent to East Fork White River and is more than 100 years old. Just in the last 10 years, the site has been flooded for more than 400 days, with the most recent major flooding in April.

The new facility will be state of the art and off of North O’Brien Street. Among the upgrades will be advanced filtration systems, modern chemical feed systems and centralized data monitoring. The plant will have emergency power generation to ensure uninterrupted service. The utility will also be building upgraded wellfield infrastructure and a new raw water main.

The water company says that the new facility will have a treatment capacity of 4.5 million gallons per day which nearly doubles the city’s current average daily demand of 2.5 million gallons. In the future, the plant capacity can be increase do six million gallons per day.

The company says is planning $42 million for the plant construction and design, and an additional $8 million for water infrastructure, wellfield improvements and other related costs.

The new plant is expected to open in the fall of 2026. Company and city officials along with Reynolds Construction held a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday for the new plant.
