St. Paul man dies in Decatur County accident

A St.Paul man died in a crash Friday night on Old U.S. Highway 421 in Decatur County.

According to Decatur County Sheriff’s Department reports, rescue workers were called to the scene of the crash at about 9:13 p.m. with witnesses reporting a vehicle on fire with occupants still inside.

Deputies found 50-year-old Shawn Scudder of St. Paul outside the vehicle and unconscious. Despite life-saving attempts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger, 27-year-old Alan Conner of St. Paul was was also found outside of the vehicle and he was conscious and alert. He was flown to IU Methodist Hospital by Statflight helicopter.

According to the preliminary investigation, Scudder was driving southbound when the vehicle left the roadway, striking a tree and rolling over. The accident remains under investigation.
