Seymour man accused of murdering ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend

A Seymour man is being charged with murder, accused of killing his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend.
According to the Dearborn County Prosecutor’s Office, 33-year-old Brent D. Wellman is being accused of shooting to death 39-year-old Dennis W. Adams Jr., of Erlanger, Ky. on Thursday.
The incident began on Wednesday at the home of the former girlfriend in North Vernon. Adams spent the night at her home, police say and overnight they heard a loud noise as if someone was breaking in but couldn’t find anything wrong at the home. Adams left at about 4:45 a.m. Thursday morning to go to work.
Dearborn County emergency dispatchers received a report at about 5:42 a.m. from a resident saying that vehicle had stopped in front of their home on U.S. 50 and shots were fired. A second caller reported that a vehicle was stopped in the highway and when the driver stopped to see what was wrong he found a man behind the wheel covered in blood on his pants and face, and a second man climbing out of the back seat and into the front seat before driving away.
Shortly afterward, police found a vehicle with Kentucky plates matching the description stopped in the roadway. A deputy approached the vehicle and said the driver appeared suspicious and drove away while being questioned. The SUV was found again after it crashed near Huesman Road. A deputy found Adams body nearby near the tree line at about 7:20 a.m. He appeared to have been shot in the upper right back several times.
An autopsy later revealed that Adams died from multiple gunshot wounds to the back
Other agencies arrived to assist in a search and at about 11:12 a.m. in the morning Indiana State Police troopers found a man wearing only his underwear in the nearby creek and the deputy identified him as the man he had found driving the SUV.
Wellman was taken into custody and charges against him include murder, resisting law enforcement with a vehicle and a firearms enhancement.
