Officials warn of dangerous ozone levels Wednesday

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management has declared an Air Quality Action Day for Wednesday.

Combining the above average temperatures, sunny skies, and light winds that are expected tomorrow, along with some wildfire smoke and a high pressure system settling over the area, is leading to an orange or unhealthy level warning from the agency. They say that those conditions are suitable for ground-level ozone to develop.

High ozone near the ground acts a lung irritant. It can cause coughing and breathing difficulties for sensitive populations. Children, the elderly, anyone with heart conditions or with respiratory disease, such as asthma, should limit prolonged outdoor exposure tomorrow.

The warning is in effect from midnight tonight to midnight Wednesday.
