Lucas reconsiders opposition to redistricting U.S. House seats

A local state legislator is changing his mind on redistricting.

State Representative Jim Lucas says on social media that he has changed his position on mid-cycle redistricting from a hard no to a “rock solid” yes.

The Seymour Republican earlier said redrawing the state’s Congressional maps now was “highly unusual and politically optically horrible,” saying elections need to be won “the old-fashioned way.”

Lucas changed his position on social media Wednesday. He says it was his experience getting back surgery at the Indiana Spine Hospital, a privately owned hospital. He praised the quality of care and the price, saying that Obamacare and insurance companies have wrought “wanton destruction” on the health care system.

He said if Democrats win control of the U.S. House, “places like this might go under.” He also said a Democratic takeover would mean “the rest of Trumps reforms in healthcare, energy cost, border control, immigration and voter reform, etc. will be dead in the water.”

Lucas represents State House District 69 which includes the far southern portion of Bartholomew along with parts of Jackson, Scott and Washington counties.
