Columbus intersection taking part in safety project
You will see a new look to an intersection on the north side of Columbus North High School, as the city takes part in a temporary safety demonstration project sponsored by the Indiana Department of Health.
According to the city engineer’s office, the temporary safety demonstration project is ongoing at the intersection of 27th Street and Home Avenue. It is meant to slow down traffic and to improve driver awareness through a combination of colored pavement markings, curb extensions and posts.
City officials say the more than 4,000 students use the intersection including those at Columbus North, Northside Middle School and St. Bartholomew Catholic School. It is also frequently used by pedestrians and bicyclists with its access to the nearby People Trail, neighborhood and restaurants.
The project is being funded by a grant from the state agency and the city will be testing how well the changes help improve safety. The results will also help the city decide on more permanent safety improvements.
Officials say that the project is a collaboration between the city engineering, planning, public works and police departments, along with Bartholomew Consolidated Schools and Columbus Regional Health.
City officials want to get your feedback on the project. You will be able to attend two open houses coming in August or share your thoughts through a survey that will be on the city Bike Walk Columbus website.
