‘Back to the Basics’ with Planter Maintenance

Planting season is right around the corner. Pioneer encourages farmers to go “back to the basics” when it comes to planter maintenance ahead of planting season, which means checking tire pressure, planter leveling, and parallel linkage arm wear. Then move to seed tubes, double disc openers, meters and closing wheels.

Once you do get in the field, Pioneer agronomist Ron Joiner offers this advice.

“One of the most important things that you want to be careful of is as you move from field to field or start planning, that you’re monitoring your planter depth. Just because you set it one time doesn’t always mean that it’s going to be correct as field conditions change from one field to the next.”

Indiana Pioneer agronomist Carl Joern says don’t spend time preparing the planter this spring without thinking about the seed. There are valuable tools at pioneer.com.

“We actually have a seed lab that’s dedicated to running each individual seed batch through the majority of the planter setups that are available on the market today.”

And Joern says it doesn’t matter if your planter is green, red, blue, or pink- a vast majority of those settings are in there and can help you get off to a fast start.

“We have that type of planter setup in the plantability lab to ensure that we can provide you with optimal settings for singulation. So, that could be your vacuum setting, pressure settings, etc. So, getting that exact prescription in terms of how to run your planter based on which seed batch you got from Pioneer is another great way to ensure that you get an awesome start to corn planting this year.”
