United Way aids local groups through Day of Service

An army of blue “United is the Way” shirts were out in force around Columbus Thursday.

The United Way of Bartholomew County had two big events going on yesterday — its annual Impact Luncheon at Amazing Joes on Central Avenue and its annual Day of Service.

Mark Stewart, head of the local United Way explains:

Stewart that more than 350 volunteers turned out to help local not for profit groups with 27 projects.

The day’s activities have traditionally been the kickoff for the annual campaign and the need remains great. Stewart said the current economic conditions including high inflation are hitting families hard here.

The United Way has a goal of lifting 1,000 families out of poverty, along with initiatives to reduce homelessness and to improve access to affordable housing. He said that the homelessness work so far has found homes for 85 people who were formerly homeless.

Stewart said that any contribution will help the United Way to lift up a family in need.
