Bartholomew joins local, state efforts against impaired driving

Local and state police agencies are  cracking down on those driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, with a “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign going on into Labor Day weekend.

According to the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department, agencies are taking part in the campaign which will include overtime patrols targeting those driving under the influence. You will see extra officers on patrol and sobriety checkpoints in effect

The extra high-visibility enforcement is in partnership with the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute.

In 2024, nearly 14% of all traffic fatalities in Indiana involved alcohol, while more than 35% of all traffic fatalities involved drug impairment, according to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System.

Police recommend celebrating the end of summer responsibly by having a safety plan in place. Never drive impaired or let friends get behind the wheel if they’ve been drinking. Even if you only have one drink, designate a sober driver or use public transportation or a ride service to get home safely.

Police also say that if you see a suspected drunk driver on the road, you should pull over to a safe spot and call 911.

The enforcement effort is underway through Aug. 30th.
