Julie Q. Smith Serving as First Director of the Office of School Safety in Indiana

A former CPD Sergeant and resource officer for Bartholomew County Schools is now serving as the first Director of the Office of School Safety in Indiana.

Governor Mike Braun announced that Julie Q. Smith will serve as the first Director of the Office of School Safety on Tuesday afternoon.

Smith retired from the Columbus Police Department on August 8th after serving over 20 years.

She spent 9 years as a patrol officer and in 2014 she became one of the first two full-time school resource officers for BCSC and began working at Columbus East High School.

5 years later she was promoted to Sergeant and SRO Supervisor.

Smith is a national instructor for the National Association of School Resource Officers, as well as regional director for the Midwest states, and is president of the Indiana School Resource Officers Association.

Governor Braun created the Office of School Safety as part of his public safety agenda.

Indiana’s Secured School Safety Board will be absorbed by Braun’s Office of School Safety.

The board already under the Department of Homeland Security, oversees millions of dollars in annual safety grants awarded to Indiana Schools.
