The suspected gunman sought in the fatal shooting of one person and wounding of another at a dormitory at the University of New Mexico was taken into custody Friday following an hours-long manhunt, according to media reports.
The University of New Mexico said in a post on X that campus police received a report of gunshots on Friday in the early morning hours at Casas del Rio, a campus housing complex. When officers arrived, one person was found dead and the other was injured but expected to survive. Police are still searching for the suspect.

University officials closed its Albuquerque central campus and issued a shelter-in-place order.

The shooting happened as new students and their families were on campus this week for orientation, UNM President Garnett Stokes said in a statement.
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of life and horrified by this act of violence in our campus community,” he said. “Our thoughts and prayers go to the loved ones and friends of those lost and injured. This is certainly a difficult moment, and it’s okay to feel overwhelmed, angry, or afraid.”
