Lux Lights the Lamp in 11th as Reds Walk Off Yankees Again

For the second straight night, the Big Apple couldn’t handle the Queen City.
Gavin Lux delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th inning Tuesday, completing a thrilling comeback as the Cincinnati Reds edged the New York Yankees 5-4. The win sealed the series for Cincinnati and marked their most dramatic victory of the year.
It was a breakout night for rookie flamethrower Chase Burns, who made history by striking out the first five batters he faced in his MLB debut. Though he allowed three runs over five innings, he flashed elite stuff and gave the Reds every reason to be excited about their future rotation.
The Reds trailed 3-0 entering the seventh, but Christian Encarnacion-Strand tied it with a bases-clearing double. After the Yankees took a 4-3 lead in the top of the 11th, Elly De La Cruz legged out an infield single to set up Spencer Steer’s game-tying knock. With the bases loaded and one out, Lux lofted a single over the infield to end it.
Cincinnati had been 0-30 this season when trailing after six innings—but not anymore. The Reds are proving they’ve got comeback chops to go with their power and speed.
They’ll aim for the sweep Wednesday when Brady Singer takes the mound against Yankees ace Max Fried.
