Choir group forming for those with dementia, caregivers
A new choir is forming in the community that will allow those living with dementia to participate in an inclusive singing experience.
According to Sandi’s Closet, the new program is being sponsored by a grant from Heritage Fund: The Community Foundation of Bartholomew County. The 14-week pilot program for Sandi’s Closet Singers is set to begin on Tuesday with rehearsals leading up to a June concert.
There will be no auditions and the choir will mostly focus on those with dementia and their caregivers. Everyone is welcome to participate
The group will also need volunteer singers who can help set up for the practice and put things away afterwards.
Organizers say that studies have shown that singing in a group has benefits for brain health and there are also physical and emotional benefits.
The program will begin on Tuesday, March 11 at Memorial Baptist Church at 10am. There will be a $20 fee to help cover costs, however scholarships will be available.
