Bartholomew County communities receiving $1.3 million in road funds

Bartholomew County communities will receive more than $1.35 million dollars in road funding from the state, according to area legislators.

The most recent rounds of funds from the Community Crossings grants program were announced with $91 million funded across the state. Locally, Edinburgh will receive $1 million, Columbus will receive $250,571 and Hope will receive $103,075.

Smaller communities must provide a 25 percent match from local funds, while larger communities must provide 50 percent to match the grant funds. State law also requires half of the grant funds be provided to communities with 50,000 people or less.

State Rep. Ryan Lauer, a Columbus Republican, said that the Community Crossing program “has helped earn our top infrastructure ranking among all other states and boost our quality of life.”

State Rep. Jennifer Meltzer, a Shelbyville Republican representing northeastern Bartholomew County, touted the grant program as a tool that communities can use to “stretch budgets farther” and allow “infrastructure improvements to be made sooner.”
