Kim Kardashian-West is continuing to fight for criminal justice reform. According to E! Online, a source has confirmed that Kim has agreed to pay five years of rent for a man named Matthew Charles — a former inmate who was denied housing after being granted clemency.
TMZ reports that Kim heard about Charles’ story through an article on Twitter. Apparently, he was first granted early release in May 2016 by mistake, and was ordered to finish out the rest of his sentence two years later. Kim reached out to Charles and his friend privately on Sunday (March 10th) and offer to pay his rent and to help him find a stable place to live.
Charles took to Facebook to share the news and revealed that Kim “heard about my situation” and was “moved” by it. He wrote, “Kim did not do this for attention or publicity, but I had to share it, because it’s to good not to, and my heart is about to burst with happiness, that I wish you to rejoice in this news with me. THANK YOU KIM KARDISHIAN-WEST and TRACY FOR THE LOVE SHOWN TO ME WHEN I WAS LOCKED UP. AND NOW THAT I’M FREE.. MY HEART IS ENLARGED.”
According to the Nashville Tennessean, Charles was released on January 3rd per President Trump’s First Step Act.
